Liverpool denied by late Stoke leveller

Liverpool looked to have salvaged three points at the end of a miserable week only for Stoke City to score late-on in the 1-1 draw at the Britannia Stadium. A less then impressive Liverpool took the lead in the second half when Potters keeper Thomas Sorensen failed to deal with a Fabio Aurelio free-kick from the right and Kyrgiakos bundled the ball into the back of the net from close range.

The Reds thought they should have had a penalty in the first period when Lucas was sent sprawling under challenge from Danny Higginbotham.

But one goal never looked enough for the visitor's to defend and in the 90th minute Danny Higginbotham headed a floated corner back across goal and Robert Huth was on hand to poke home.

Incredibly there was still time for Liverpool to claim the three points and ease the pressure on boss Rafa Benitez.

But deep into injury time the unmarked Dirk Kuyt contrived to head against the post from six yards.
