Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk is confident he can develop a strong centre-back partnership with Joe Gomez.

The pair started together in Saturday's 4-0 thrashing of West Ham United. With Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren sidelined, it is likely they'll continue working together over the next few weeks.And that is something van Dijk is perfectly content with.

"I was not really worried to be fair," he said.

"I've played a couple of games pre-season with Joe at centre back and I have a very good relationship with him, a very good understanding outside of the pitch as well. That helps and hopefully we can build something.

"We need everyone in the squad. Everyone needs to be ready when we need you to stand there. It's very important at our club."
