Sebastian Coates is set to have surgery on his injured knee says a statement from the Uruguayan FA.
The Liverpool defender sustained a knee problem late in last week's international friendly between Uruguay and Japan in Rifu, Miyagi which has since been diagnosed as a torn anterior cruciate ligament.
It was initially not feared a severe injury but the 22-year old centre-half will know go under the knife and is likely to be sidelined for some time.
"In the medical tests, we found out that the player had a torn ligament in his right knee so we have decided to take him to surgery. It will be done on Friday in Sao Paulo", a Uruguayan FA statement said.
