Liverpool have confirmed Javier Mascherano suffered a knee injury as part of his red card tackle in defeat at Portsmouth on Saturday.
Mascherano limped out of the 2-0 defeat with a knee injury and was assessed by the club's medical staff at Melwood on Sunday.
A club spokesman said: "The player had a scan this afternoon which confirmed the medical team's initial diagnosis that he suffered a medial ligament sprain in his left knee.
"He is expected to be sidelined for two to three weeks."
