Liverpool chiefs are convinced of beating champions-elect Manchester United for Aston Villa star Ashley Young. The Sun says Young is one of Alex Ferguson's top targets this summer and the United boss was convinced he would be at Old Trafford next season.
But Anfield sources now insist Kenny Dalglish - set to be confirmed as permanent Kop boss within days - has stepped up his own attempts and is just as certain that the 25-year-old will be heading to Merseyside.
United will edge past Liverpool when they confirm a record 19th league title, yet the Reds believe they are still the best option for Young.
They reckon the chance of first-team action is all but guaranteed at Anfield, while United have Antonio Valencia, Nani, Ji-Sung Park and Ryan Giggs all battling for a place on the wing.
Liverpool, who tried to sign Young in January, are also adamant they can outdo their rivals when it comes to personal terms.
