Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard was frantically seeking news on the departure of manager Rafa Benitez yesterday.

The London Evening Standard says the first thing Steven Gerrard did when landing in South Africa with the rest of the England squad was to check his mobile for updates on his club manager Benitez.

Benitez officially announced his departure in the afternoon after agreeing a pay-off with the Reds board.
