Liverpool captain Gerrard desperate for derby to kickstart season

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard hopes they can kickstart their season in today's derby.

He acknowledges the Reds have so far yet to hit top form this term, but he's confident a victory over the Blues can provide everyone at Anfield with a further boost following New England Sports Ventures' purchase of the club on Friday.

Gerrard told Liverpoolfc.tv: "We're in a position in the league where we don't want to be and we realise if we take maximum points it can move us into a more comfortable position.

"Merseyside derbies are always big. There's a big rivalry between the two teams and we want our supporters to hold the bragging rights come Sunday evening.

"It's a massive game and we need to make sure we improve on our last performance if we want to win at Goodison."

Liverpool head into the game in 18th position in the Barclays Premier League, but Gerrard has past experience of what winning a Merseyside derby can do for the team's confidence.

"I've experienced it in the past when you've come off the back of a few bad results, but then you go into a derby or a big game in the league and you win - it gives everyone confidence," he said.

"Now the important thing is to improve things on the pitch and if we can get a good, convincing derby win it will do wonders for the team."
