Liverpool on brink of Champions League elimination

Liverpool's continued participation in this years Champions League is now out of their hands after conceding late on to draw 1-1 in Lyon. Substitute Ryan Babel had put the Reds ahead with a 25-yard thunderbolt with seven minutes remaining.

But some sloppy defending allowed Lisandro to dramatically equalise and send Lyon through to the knockout stages of the competition.

Liverpool had only themselves to blame for wasting a number of glorious opportunities, particularly in the first half.

Fernando Torres, Andriy Voronin and Lucas Leiva all missed glaring opportunities which was to cost the Anfield outfit dear.

The Reds now have to beat Debrecen and Fiorentina while hoping other results go their way to stand a chance of reaching the last 16.

Boss Rafa Benitez was still bullish about their chances and was pleased with the response of the players.

"I thought we deserved to win, we had some chances , and to concede a goal in the last minute was really unlucky, he told ITV1.

"The team showed character and the response of the players was positive but I was disappointed for last goal.

"Ryan has the pace and ability to change a game and we want to see more of that in other games.

"We have to win our games and score goals so we are still in with a chance."
