Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers knows Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez could've taken the job before him.
Martinez is manager Rodgers followed at Swansea and who was seen with Kop owner John W Henry when the summer hunt for a boss was under way.
Rodgers added: "I know Roberto spoke to the owners but there is certainly nothing in it from my perspective.
"I don't know if he was close to getting this job but this is purely a case of us wanting to win."
