Liverpool boss Rodgers explains leaving Coutinho at home

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has explained leaving Philippe Coutinho at home for their Europa League tie at Besiktas.

Rodgers is unhappy at the time tonight's game will allow him to prepare for Sunday's crucial Premier League clash against Manchester City at Anfield.

"It's not ideal, especially with the early kick-off," Rodgers said.

"I've had to bring out Coutinho. He's played a lot of games consecutively for us now.

"This was a game that I'd earmarked to give him some recovery in knowing he can stay at home, not travel and prepare and get ready for the weekend.

"That extra period of 48 hours that they (City) will have could be crucial.

"It'll be 3am when we get back, the players will probably get home around 4:30am. Then we'll aim to train and recover later that day.

"It is still a European competition. I would rather be in it than not in it. It is unfortunate but we will do our best."
