Liverpool boss Rodgers defends Sturridge England withdrawal

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has defended Danny Sturridge's withdrawal from the England squad.

Sturridge was forced to miss the World Cup qualifiers against Moldova and Ukraine with a thigh problem sustained in the win over Manchester United but he could be fit for Liverpool's trip to Swansea on Monday after returning to training on Friday.

"Daniel was disappointed to miss England," said Rodgers. "Medical experts made the decision. They deemed him not fit enough.

"When you have a grade one strain it is perfectly reasonable to be back within two weeks. We are going on the advice of experts. He hasn't turned down playing for his country. If it was a Saturday game, he might have struggled but I hope that he will be fit for Monday."
