Liverpool boss Klopp: Southampton win deserved, but only…

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp felt his side deserved to be beaten by Southampton tonight.

The Reds lost the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final 1-0 at St Mary's after Nathan Redmond scored in the 20th minute.

Klopp felt Cluade Puel's side got the right result but took solace in the fact that there is another leg to be played at Anfield in a fortnight's time.

Asked if it was a performance not symbolic of the usual Liverpool, Klopp said: "I think at the start it was, like we are usually.

"After the goal we conceded the response was not good. We lost timing, not compact enough, everything changed, the reaction was not good.

"It's easy to explain, we made the wrong decisions. We can do much better. In an away game, you concede a goal it's no problem. We showed in the first 15-20 minutes, we were on the right path."

Southampton tried to make it an open affair at times, and Klopp felt that allowed them to clinch an impressive victory.

"Open games are difficult, they had the biggest chances because we were not compact," he added.

"Loris (Karius) had to save us, and it is a deserved win for Southampton. But only half-time so all good."

Regarding his players underperforming on the night, Klopp replied: "I'm used to it,I work with human beings.

"I'm not always in the best shape myself, so we have to look at it again.

"The reaction as not good. Why exactly? I have to see the game again.

"It's already gone and we will go to Man United (on Sunday), and all the other games, and then Southampton again which will be a completely different game.

"Tonight we were not good enough over 90 minutes but we can do better."
