Liverpool boss Roy Hodgson says uniting the senior and academy setups cannot be done short-term.
Steven Gerrard is keen for the Kirkby academy to be relocated at Melwood.
Hodgson told liverpoolfc.tv: "We're all in favour of that (youngsters and senior stars being together). It's never been a question. The only problem is, it's a question of space. We can't do it here at Melwood. It would mean closing Melwood down and moving everyone to Kirkby, which is not such a good site. It's the famous house buyer who finds the right house in the wrong location.
"Maybe one day the club will decide everyone's got to move out to Kirkby. In my opinion that would be sad because Melwood is a very traditional home for Liverpool Football Club.
"We do have one of the best facilities that you could possibly wish to have for a first team. But if we tried to accommodate our academy here, we'd have no chance with only three pitches. It's one of those pie in the sky discussions."
