Liverpool boss cries foul on Coutinho non-penalty - ‘Honesty and desire is punished’

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes Philippe Coutinho could have stretched the truth and won himself a penalty on Sunday.

The Brazilian playmaker received contact in the area in the second half of his side's eventual 2-1 home loss to Crystal Palace, but instead of going down, he stayed on his feet in an attempt to get a shot off.

After the match, Klopp spoke of the incident which he feels may have gone the way of his team if Coutinho had taken a less honest approach.

"We had Phil in the box – you can tell me if it's a penalty or not," he said.

"Everybody told me yes, if he goes down it's a penalty; if he doesn't go down it's not a penalty.

"Maybe we should think about this – honesty and desire is punished. Not sure that makes sense, but it happens."

Coutinho had scored a stunning opening goal with a free-kick from range in the 24th minute before a brace from Christian Benteke saw off the challenge of the Reds.
