Liverpool boss Benitez seeks contract talks with owners

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is seeking talks with the club's American owners over his contract.

The People says while Tom Hicks offered public backing for Benitez only last week, the Spanish coach wants an indication that his contract will be discussed later this year.

Benitez has two and a half years left on his present deal but no firm guarantees have been given to the Liverpool manager that the owners want to offer him an extended stay on Merseyside.

And after they publicly admitted they had approached former German boss Jurgen Klinsmann about replacing Benitez this summer, Benitez and his advisors want more than just words.

AC Milan and Real Madrid are understood to be watching how things develop for Benitez and, although the Spaniard publicly says he intends to see out his contract, there is still an uneasy peace between himself and the under-fire owners.
