Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez is hoping skipper Steven Gerrard can begin to influence the team and help bring about positive results.

The star midfielder netted twice for England in their World Cup qualifying win over Croatia on Wednesday and Benitez expects him to re-produce that form when he steps out for the Reds.

"It will be very positive for his confidence to score two goals and play well," he said.

"We need the best from him. He knows this game after the international break will always be difficult, but hopefully he can do well and have the same confidence as always.

"England's success is important for the country and for the confidence of our players. They did well for England so that is good for them and us.

"A player has to play with the team, so when the team is not doing well it is not easy for him," he added.
