The 21 year-old Chile international has struggled to make an impact at Villarreal since his arrival 18 months ago, but remains highly-rated within the game and has attracted enquiries from Lazio and Inter Milan.
The Telegraph says Benitez is convinced he can get the best out of Fernandez and is seeking a January deal for the youngster.
