Liverpool board favours Villa boss O'Neill
Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has emerged as a top target for Liverpool.
The News of the World says American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett have identified O'Neill to succeed Rafa Benitez if Liverpool fail to qualify for next season's Champions League.
Hicks, Gillett, and managing director Christian Purslow are standing by beleaguered Benitez despite Liverpool's woeful recent run of form.
But behind the scenes the mood of staunch support for Benitez has shifted as Liverpool's season has lurched towards chaos, with six defeats, one draw and just one win in their last eight games.
The club are wary of making a knee-jerk reaction but recognise that unless results improve dramatically - and soon - they will have to consider replacing Benitez during the season rather than next summer.
Kenny Dalglish has been tipped to hold the Anfield fort if Benitez IS sacked before May but he would only be keeping the seat warm for O'Neill.

You are totally deluded mate, Martin O'Neill wouldn't touch the shambles that is Liverpool football club with a barge pole...The very idea that Gillette and Hicks could click their fingers and MoN would jump at the chance to fill the shoes of Benitez, is absolutely obsurd...I'm afraid Rafa, the muppets from the US, Liverpool FC and their fans deserve all they get nowadays...LFC, no longer everyone's second club...Up the Villa!!!
Hands off our god!
LOL, poor deluded Liverpool fans.
Why on earth would MON leave The Villa to work for the 2 stupid Americans that they have up there???
He doesn't speak Spanish also (which would mean that he couldn't communicate with half the team.)
He is building a team of 90% British players, ALL players that he wanted!!
Liverpool have only got 3-4 decent players anyway.
Everyone I know that supports Liverpool wears treble thickness red tinted glasses every time they watch them.
