Peter Littlewood, the America-based marketing chief who turned down the FA chief executive's job in May 2003 because he did not fancy the publicity, is understood to have been on the last shortlist for the Manchester United commercial director's position.

He could still end up at Old Trafford following the departure of Lee Daley after just four months in the job.
