Lewington confident Fulham will avoid player exodus

Fulham caretaker boss Ray Lewington is confident the club can keep the squad together, despite Roy Hodgson's departure for Liverpool.

Hodgson's departure has left a cloud of uncertainty over a number of the star players who played an important part in guiding the Cottagers to their first-ever European final last season.

Mark Schwarzer and Brede Hangeland have been strongly linked with a move across London to Arsenal, while Paul Konchesky has been tipped to return to the club he supported as a boy, West Ham United.

Birmingham boss Alex McLeish is also said to be interested in taking Bobby Zamora to St Andrew's.

But Lewington said: "I don't think the players will be looking elsewhere.

"They're a tight bunch of players and it's all about them now. The manager can push and prod but, at the end of the day, it's the players who go out and play.

"Their achievement last year was fantastic. I think they all appreciate Roy had to move on and we've no problem with that, but they're here, they are all contracted and they have kept the same team spirit.

"We've had no problem in the week or so we've been training. They're geared up for the season and wanting to do as well as they did last year."
