Scotland coach Craig Levein has revealed Mark Hughes wanted to sign Nikica Jelavic for Fulham 18 months ago.

Jelavic is now a star with Everton.

Levein told the Scottish Sun: "I remember Mark Hughes phoning me to ask about Jelavic when he'd just taken over at Fulham.

"All I said to him was: 'Just take him'. I said that for the money he'd cost he'd be well worth it. He was fantastic at that time.

"Most people argued against Jelavic because he was playing in the SPL, but the lad was an international for Croatia. He was no mug.

"I wouldn't be surprised if he kicked on again this summer.

"If he has a good Euros and then starts the season well with Everton there will be teams sniffing about him."
