Saints want Ross Wilson from Huddersfield to replace Reed as their director of football at the end of the season.
The news will surprise Saints fans, with Reed overseeing the club's youth system and also becoming the public face of the club at the end of last season as they faced a mass exodus of players.
Wilson was made a director at Huddersfield a little over a year ago.
