Lennon proud of battling Celtic team in Champions League debut

Celtic manager Neil Lennon was full of praise for his inexperienced line-up who managed a point in their opening Champions League fixture last night.

The Hoops held Benfica to a 0-0 draw at Parkhead with twelve of the 13 players used making their first group stage appearance in Europe's premier club competition.

Although it wasn't a win at home, Lennon was happy to record a point which is something the Glasgow club can build on as the group stage progresses.

"We showed no fear against a class side and I believe it's a decent start," he said.

"It could have been better, but it also could have been worse. I had ten guys out there making their Champions League debuts against a very experienced side at this level.

"I'm very proud of the team tonight. I felt a draw was a fair result. We didn't work their keeper as much as I would have liked.

"But we played with a very good tempo, had a good shape to us and were totally committed.

"We'll learn as we go along. The players have sampled it now, they will be better for it.

"We've gained a point but also, I hope, a bit more respect from the footballing world.

"It was a tactical battle and Benfica will be the happier going away. But there wasn't anything between the teams.

"We would have lost that game last year.
