Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel has undergone successful knee surgery.

The Dutchman, who spent last season at PSV Eindhoven, had his operation on Tuesday.

Chelsea have since announced they expect Van Ginkel will need eight months of recovery before he returns to competitive action.

Van Ginkel has been linked with Fenerbahce, where former PSV coach Phillip Cocu is now in charge. However, everything is now on hold after the surgery.

The midfielder is tied to Chelsea until 2020.
