Leijer set for Melbourne Victory captaincy

Adrian Leijer is all set to take the captain's armband for the Melbourne Victory.

The 24-year old defender will come in for the injured Kevin Muscat and lead the Victory, starting in tonight's first midweek clash of the season with Wellington Phoenix at AAMI Park.

Muscat is expected to be out for up to four weeks and Victory coach Ernie Merrick confirmed that Leijer would be the one to take over from the veteran.

"Kevin's leadership is probably the best in the A-League, so that's where a few boys will have to step up. We've got the players to do that. We've got Grant Brebner, Adrian Leijer, Rody Vargas," he said.

"The captain's armband will go to Adrian Leijer. He's been a worthy leader every time Kevin has been unavailable."

Muscat injured his foot in Sunday's 3-0 win over Brisbane Roar and should miss at least two weeks with a maximum of four.
