Leicester boss Shakespeare: Liverpool dominated first-half. We lived a charmed life

Leicester City manager Craig Shakespeare knows his side were fortunate not too be down at half-time in their third round Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool.

But the Foxes regrouped in the second stanza and made the match their own, with goals from Shinji Okazaki and Islam Slimani sealing their passage to the fourth round.

"You talk about football being a game of two halves and it definitely was," Leicester manager Shakespeare told Sky Sports.

"I thought the first goal was always going to be crucial. Of course first half we thought it was going to be Liverpool because we did lead a charmed life.

"But it's about staying in the game in football land to get the first goal was massively important."

Shakespeare revealed that half-time introspection allowed to them to regenerate for the rest of the match.

We knew at half-time we had to regroup. It was to our advantage in terms of Philippe Coutinho going off at half-time.

"We spoke to the boys about being more aggressive, getting in Liverpool's faces a bit more and playing with a bit more intent.

"Bringing Shinji on makes that bit of difference, he plays with that intent, desire and enthusiasm."

Defender Wes Morgan expressed similar sentiments about their half-time rejuvenation.

He said: "At half-time we had to have a long look at ourselves, the gaffer wasn't happy and the second half was completely different.

"Our backs were against the wall. They had a lot of time, a lot of space so they were getting in a lot of threatening positions so we were fortunate not concede in the first half. We defended well at times, went into the second half and we turned up."
