Leeds legend Jack Charlton breaks hip in fall

Leeds United and England legend Jack Charlton has broken his hip in a fall.

England 1966 World Cup winner Charlton had to crawl for help after breaking his hip in a fall at home on Tuesday night.

The former Leeds defender and Republic of Ireland boss, 76, was alone at his house in Morpeth, Northumberland when he fell down the stairs.

Charlton's son, John, said: "The stairs in his house are a bit tricky and awkward and he basically fell down them.

"It could have been a lot worse because my mum was out of the house and he was on his own. Because of his age they want to operate on him, give him a new hip. We've all been worrying but he's going to be fine.

"The doctors say he'll be back on his feet within 24 hours of the operation and should be home next week.

"He's in good spirits considering what happened. He's sitting up in bed cracking jokes with the nurses."
