Lecco defender Andrea Merenda is set for trials with Central Coast Mariners. Mariners boss Lawrie McKinna told the Sydney Morning Herald: "Merenda is a former Italian under-20, or so we've been told, but he's 31 and has spent the past few years in the lower leagues in Italy."

Off contract Chateauroux defender Jonathan Bru is also continuing his trials.

McKinna, meanwhile, revealed he's asked to take Sheffield United reserve David Carney on-loan. The Mariners have a partnership with the Blades.

"They offered us two players from Ferencvaros but we weren't interested in those. Dave was one of the players we asked about but we haven't heard back yet," McKinna said.
