LeBron James is the only thing I knew about Ohio says Seattle Sounders recruit Moffat

Adam Moffat has revealed he knew very little about the USA when he first arrived in the country from Scotland to play soccer.

The 27-year old Seattle Sounders signing joined Columbus Crew (then coached by Sounders boss Sigi Schmid) in 2007 after a short stint with Cleveland City Stars following his shift from Scottish Third Division side Elgin City.

Since then, the Glasgow-born midfielder has played for Portland Timbers and the Houston Dynamo which has educated him a little more about the States but at the time of his move to Ohio, he was only familiar with one man - NBA star LeBron James.

"It was funny. It was out of the blue. It was a random phone call," Moffat told the Seattle Times of how his move to the US came about.

"I was playing in the third division in Scotland at the time, kind of not headed anywhere good. The third division in Scotland isn't where you want to be if you want to have a career. So it didn't look too good for me at the time - I was 20 years old.

"I got a phone call from an old coach, he said, 'Hey, a friend of mine is coaching a team in Cleveland, Ohio. Do you know anything about Ohio?' I said, 'I know LeBron James. That's about it.'

"So I went over and played in the USL for four months. It was great. It was like a second chance for me. It's tough in Scotland. It's the main sport and everyone wants to play it.

"There aren't that many teams, so opportunities aren't as great, so I was thankful to get that in the US and thankful for (Sounders head coach) Sigi (Schmid) bringing me into the league (with Columbus)."
