LEAGUE CUP WRAP: Arsenal, Tottenham, Man Utd and Liverpool all go through

The second night of third round action in the Capital One Cup basically went to plan for all the more-fancied sides.

Of the 12 teams who played tonight, nine were from the Premier League with all expected results coming through apart from QPR's loss to Reading.

Arsenal hammered League OneCoventry City 6-1 at the Emirates Stadium with Olivier Giroud getting off the mark for his new club by opening the scoring six minutes before half-time. He was joined on the scoresheet by Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andrei Arshavin, Theo Walcott (twice) and Ignasi Miquel whilst Callum Ball grabbed one for the Bluebirds with six of the game's seven goals coming in the second half.

The Gunners' North London rivals, Tottenham, also moved through to the next stage with a 3-0 win at League OneCarlisle United thanks to goals from Jan Vertonghen, Andros Townsend and Gylfi Sigurdsson as Norwich City beat their lower division opponents Doncaster Rovers 1-0 at home via summer signing Alexander Tettey's 26th minute effort.

QPR led twice but eventually lost 3-2 to Reading at Loftus Road in the only minor upset of the evening which saw Junior Hoilett open his R's account before Kaspars Gorkss responded for the Royals inside 17 minutes.

Djibril Cisse put the West Londoners ahead with 20 minutes remaining but last season's Championship winners responded through Nicky Shorey and Pavel Pogrebnyak for the win.

Manchester United got the job done at home against Newcastle United 2-1 courtesy of goals either side of the break from Anderson and Tom Cleverley before Papiss Cisse scored his first of the season just after the hour-mark but it was not enough for the Magpies.

And finally, Liverpool had some joy at last as they reversed their opening day Premier League defeat by beating West Bromwich Albion 2-1 at The Hawthorns thanks to a double from new boy Nuri Sahin after Gabriel Tamas' early opener.
