Lazio star Mauri thrilled to score in derby victory

Lazio midfielder Stefano Mauri was thrilled to score in the derby win over AS Roma.

The midfielder was wearing the captain's armband and hadn't found the net in a year, as he barely featured this season due to thigh surgery.

"I am so happy at scoring my first goal in a derby, but above all for the team and the fans," he said after the 2-1 victory over Roma.

"We lost too many and winning two in the same season is fantastic. We dedicate it to our fans. It was difficult to stay out for such a long time, as I wanted to come back and give my teammates a hand.

"This is the year of consecration for Lazio, although obviously having an extra man from so early was an advantage.

"We suffered to get this win and should've sealed it earlier, but despite the injury crisis this is the proof that whoever steps on to the field, they all know what to do and give their contribution. We're not in third place for nothing.

"I also want to dedicate the goal to my mother, who has just undergone an operation and is at home watching on television."
