Lazio president Claudio Lotito has poured cold water on the prospect of signing Manchester United striker Robin van Persie.

Van Persie, 31, was pictured at Rome's Fiumicino airport on Saturday morning, which sparked speculation that the Netherlands international was closing in on a move to the Serie A outfit.

"Van Persie? Haven't you figured this out yet?" Lotito told Corriere dello Sport.

"It's all rubbish! Total bull! [Agent Vincenzo] Morabito is the one trying to spread these rumours."
