Lazio coach Ballardini: Zarate should apologise to me

Lazio coach Davide Ballardini is demanding an apology from Mauro Zarate.

The striker's agent demanded a public apology after criticism this week, but it seems this situation is deteriorating.

"I don't think I was over the top in trying to correct the errors of young players," insisted Ballardini. "In my role it is practically a duty to educate and improve these lads in their profession. I did not publicly accuse the player, these were things we had already discussed in person and with the squad when Zarate was present.

"I do not believe that any team can benefit from having a spoilt player who thinks he can do anything he wants. I'm not naming Zarate specifically, but this is a wider issue in football."

Zarate's agent said if there was not a public apology, then Lazio would have to choose between the player and his Coach.

"I don't see what I should apologise for. If anything, he should apologise to me," continued Ballardini. "I think someone like Zarate who improves as a person and a player is good for all of Lazio. We want him to become an even more important player.

"I have a long experience working in youth academies and it's important not to let them think they can get away with everything. There are some who are mature and exemplary professionals, like Stefan Radu. How will Zarate react on the field? I just ask him to play a bigger part, to be more present both when the team attacks and defends."
