Lawrenson calls on legend Dalglish to take reins at Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes his former teammate Kenny Dalglish is the perfect man to take over from departing boss Rafael Benitez for the time being.

The Reds and the Spaniard will part company by mutual consent officially before the weekend and Lawrenson believes current Liverpool academy coach Dalglish is the right candidate to oversee the club in its time of uncertainty.

"I would have thought Kenny would be heavily involved and quite rightly so - maybe not just in choosing the manager but holding the fort in the meantime," Lawrenson told BBC Radio 5 Live.

Another former player, ex-striker John Aldridge, weighed into the debate saying that Dalglish would perhaps be better suited to helping find the next Liverpool manager rather than being it, even if it is for the short-term.

"I don't really think Kenny would want the job," said Aldridge. "He might be a bit too long in the tooth.

"But certainly over the last six months he's become a massive figure in and around Anfield and he'd be a trusted figure to perhaps go out and find the ideal candidate we need at the club."
