Sebastian Larsson has welcomed Sunderland's move for Jermain Defoe.
The Evening Chronicle says the Toronto FC striker is on Wearside discussing a three-and-a-half-year contract with the Black Cats, in a player-plus-cash swap deal that could see Jozy Altidore join the MLS franchise.
"During the window, you always want to add to the squad," said Larsson. "When the window closes, you'd like to have a few additions and a stronger team with more competition for places.
"Hopefully that's the case.
"But I've been quite good about staying away from the rumours, because I didn't know too much about that one (the Defoe one).
"He's a proven goalscorer, so that's great.
"But as I said, I haven't heard many rumours. Maybe I'm just not watching enough telly or reading newspapers!
"Whoever might come in, we'll welcome them and hopefully they'll make us even better."
