Former Barcelona president Joan Laporta admits he turned down "many" offers for Lionel Messi during his time in charge. Messi is now being linked with a move away next summer, with Manchester City, Chelsea and Bayern Munich being linked.
"When I was president, many clubs tried. There was a time when I said to Jorge, his father, 'Your son will be treated like mine. Surely there will be more money offered, but the reward of staying will be glory with Barca. Let's make a team with players who complement Leo, not compete with him'.
"They decided to continue. He's a coveted player."
