Lampard leaves it late for Chelsea

An injury time winner from Frank Lampard gave Chelsea a 2-1 win over gutsy Wigan at Stamford Bridge. The Blues go ahead of Liverpool on goal difference into second place as new boss Guus Hiddink made it three wins out of three.

A deflected John Terry shot had given Chelsea a half time lead and when Oliver Kapo drew Wigan level with eight minutes remaining it looked like the visitors would snatch a point.

But Lampard's looping header was enough to give Chelsea an invaluable three points.

Hiddink told the BBC his side still had an outside chance of claiming the title.

"It's always difficult after a midweek game which is very loaded against you to get a good result in the next game which was today," explained the Chelsea coach.

"I think it's a very, very decent time to play. Wigan when they are off the ball work hard and when they are on the ball they are clever so it's difficult to play Wigan.

"I think we should have finished it off a little bit more in the first 25 minutes when we had some good chances through Frank Lampard amongst others," said Hiddink.

"But they did well in the second half, they came and they made their goal but happily the reaction of the team was really good to have the winning goal in the 90th minute."

The Dutchman admitted they would need Manchester United to slip up if they were to have any chance of the title.

"First of all we need to go on as we did now and try and get some easy scores and not with such suffering.

"We are depending on whether (Edwin) Van der sar is open to let some goals in and I doubt it to be honest but as long as it is possible we fight for that."
