Lampard: 'Golden generation' tag holding England back

Frank Lampard believes England have a strong squad but would rather they were not labelled the 'golden generation.' The Chelsea midfielder, alongside international colleagues Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard, John Terry, Ashley Cole and Rio Ferdinand are often hailed among the world's best players.

But the Three Lions remain without silverware and, while a failure to fulfil potential is acknowledged, Lampard has sounded his annoyance at having to deal with the tag.

"The whole 'golden generation' thing is quite frustrating for us players," he said. "We didn't make up the term. I don't know where it got made.

"But the reason people talk about the 'golden generation' is that we have a good crop of players.

"They are very talented individuals, but we have not made the most of it. We have all held our hands up to that many times."

However, with qualification for the 2010 World Cup already secured, Lampard is confident that a trophy might not be too far away.

"Now is a great chance," he admitted. "I am not saying we are going to win the World Cup, but we are in better shape than we have been.

"The team is working as a unit much better than it has done in the past. We have good individuals; we are experienced - and we have World Cups behind us.

"But the proof will be in the pudding. It is up to us to take all those plus points and use them next summer."

Lampard is also determined to make 100 appearances for England, having already clocked up 75 caps for his country.

"I want to make it 100," he added. "I am determined to try and do that.

"I have enjoyed every cap I have got and am very proud to have reached that level because I never thought I would get that number when I won my first cap 10 years ago.

"It doesn't seem like 10 years. I will try and carry on playing for my country and will work hard to do as much as I can for as long as I can.

"If it gets me to a century of caps great, although if it gets me to a World Cup win, it would be even better."
