Lampard is keen to sign a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge - if his terms are matched - but is holding fire until the Blues announce who will be taking over from Avram Grant.

The 29-year-old, whose current deal expires next summer, has been linked with a move to Inter Milan, and speculation has mounted after former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho took over at Inter last week.

Lampard was due to open talks after England's friendlies against the USA and Trinidad and Tobago last week but negotiations have been put on hold for a bit longer.

But chief executive Peter Kenyon insisted: "At no time have we thought a replacement for Frank was on the cards and we would like to get rid of the speculation."

Chairman Bruce Buck added: "We're hopeful, confident, that we'll reach agreement with Frank and he'll be here for the long-term.

"We've said all along, we love Frank Lampard, the fans love Frank, and he's a great player. We want him to stay at Chelsea Football Club."
