Lambert has informed his compatriot that he will remain on the sidelines for the foreseeable future while the Scotland international pockets a £45,000 weekly wage.
"Alan understands the situation here," said Lambert, "I've had good conversations with him.
"It will be unlikely that he will ever play here. He knows that. We need to get the structure (wage) down to a level.
"We have to look at the books and Alan understands that. Is it all to do with the money? More of less, yes.
"Finances are just the way they are. It's nobody's fault. That's just the way football is."
