LA Galaxy's Beckham lifts lid on England axe

LA Galaxy star David Beckham has lifted the lid on how he was axed by England boss Steve McClaren after last summer's World.

Beckham, speaking on ITV's New Beginnings programme about his move to LA Galaxy, said: "I was sat on a plane next to Jonathan Woodgate when he phoned. It came up 'private number' and I thought it was my wife Victoria phoning me before my flight. He said: 'It's Steve. There's a new beginning now. I'm going to be the England coach and I'll be picking a new team. In every team there are going to be casualties, and I'm sorry to say you're one of them'. That was sort of the end of the conversation.

"For me it was a case of crying and then thinking I was on a plane and someone would have had something to say about that.

"After a day or two I thought: 'OK, this is the situation, how do I get myself out of it?'"

Beckham was recalled by McClaren for the friendly against Brazil at Wembley in June.
