LA Galaxy's Villarreal blames Olympic team call-up for injury absence

Jose Villarreal admits he was a little naïve when turning out for the USA U23 team last month.

The 21-year old LA Galaxy attacking midfielder suffered a hamstring strain in late March before a recurrence of the problem in early April saw him sidelined.

However, Villarreal answered a call from Olympic team coach Andi Herzog ahead of the April 22 clash with Mexico in which he sustained further damage to the problem area.

Villarreal has not played for the Galaxy since and despite being on the comeback trail, acknowledges that he jumped the gun with his decision to say yes to Herzog.

"I'm doing pretty well. I'm progressing pretty fast," Villarreal said.

"I don't really know a time frame yet, but, hopefully, next week I'll be training fully. This week is going to be mostly just getting fit and getting back to my base and going from there, but I'm going to be good in two weeks, I'd say.

"I was already coming back from the first injury. It was kind of dumb of me to step in at that time. But it was the Olympic coach; I wasn't going to say no to him.

"He said hop on, and I should have said, you know, 'Put someone else in; I should warm up properly.' But things happen."
