LA Galaxy star David Beckham has targeted glory for the Great Britain football team at the 2012 London Olympics.

Following the disappointment of the English national team at the World Cup, Beckham wants to play a major role in helping the United Kingdom combine taste success before hanging up the boots.

"He's gutted about the World Cup but now he is gunning for the Olympics," a source close to Beckham told the Daily Star.

"He has a long, slow road to recovery but, assuming he meets his doctor's timetable, he could return to LA Galaxy by mid-September.

"Now the ultimate goal is Olympic glory.

"He thinks leading the squad to gold would be the ultimate way to retire."
