Robbie Rogers was given a chance in a new position for LA Galaxy II on Monday.
The 26-year old, who is usually deployed as a left-sided midfielder, was thrown in at left-back as the Galaxy's USL PRO side defeated Charlotte Eagles 2-1.
The former Columbus Crew and Leeds United winger played 45 minutes in defence and did well according to Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena.
"He did okay. We want to try him at that position as well to help give us a little cover," said Arena.
Rogers played at left-back for the USA team at the Beijing Olympics so said it was not too unusual for him to slot back there with Curt Onalfo's Galaxy II.
"It was different. I played there once in the Olympics and [former U.S. National Team head coach Bob Bradley] used to put me there in training," Rogers told the club's official website.
"With the way things are with injuries to the first team. They thought it would be good to give me a look.
"It was good to get tested and I thought that we did a good job defending," added Rogers. "It was just good to get a rep in and play back there again."
Rogers, who has been battling injury in the early stages of the MLS season, joined LA in May last year but has made just 16 appearances for the senior side.
