Vincent Kompany played down suggestions that Manchester City’s 4-1 win over Manchester United on Sunday was a defining moment in the new season.

City produced a stunning display in Manuel Pellegrini’s first Manchester derby with the win made possible by a brace from Sergio Aguero and additional goals from Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri.

When asked if a victory of this nature sent a message to the rest of the league, Kompany was quick to play down the magnitude of such an early triumph.

"I think you make a statement over the whole season. It's too early to say if it's a defining game,‚ÄĚ he told Sky Sports.

"But it would be silly to give away those very precious three points. We need to win the next games, and then we'll enjoy what we've done today.

"As I said, when we won 6-1 at Old Trafford (in 2011), I said we need to stay humble. It's only three points, but it gives us all the confidence and allows the fans to celebrate for a few days."
