Ronald Koeman believes finishing in the top four may be too far out of reach for his Southampton side.
The south coast club currently sit second on the Premier League after a brilliant beginning under the Dutchman but he is remaining realistic regarding their ambitions this season.
Koeman touched on whether or not he believes the Saints can push for a Champions League spot in 2014/15, indicating that it could be quite a task for a club like his to achieve that feat.
"It isn't realistic," he said.
"We have played only five games in the Premier League and at the end of the season are 38.
"We know it's a long season, it's a tough season.
"OK, we know we have a very good start and, of course, after the win of last Tuesday, the expectations of the fans and of the press is much higher than it was before the first game.
"But it will be more difficult and we have to realise that and to keep going."
Southampton, who have three wins and a draw from five league outings, will look to improve their record when they take on QPR at St Mary's Stadium on Saturday.
