Koeman calm on development of Southampton starlet Gallagher

Southampton manager Ronald Koeman has insisted that he has no plans of handing young Sam Gallagher a place in the first team just yet.

Gallagher is another one of the many talented young players to have emerged from the famed Southampton academy in recent times and the striker managed to make a huge impression when scoring the winning goal in the U21 Premier League Cup final on Monday.

Manager Koeman was in attendance during the clash to witness Gallagher's exploits but has insisted that the striker will not be drafted into the first team as there is a lot of competition for places at this point in the season.

When asked about Gallagher's chances of being selected for Saturday's clash with Tottenham, Koeman said: "No because we have at the moment enough players in our first team but of course it's one of the players that did a great job last Monday.

"I don't like to mention one player because the whole team was amazing with a fantastic spirit in the team. We know we have a lot of young players and Sam Gallagher was struggling this season with several injuries and little by little he is back in his physical state you need to play the first team.

"Five games left of the season and sometimes he will be part of the training sessions but to come in the first 18 is quite difficult."
