Patrick Kluivert admits he understood the snub from Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal at the start of the season.
Van Gaal was expected to name Kluivert his No2.
"Louis wanted Ryan Giggs for my position and I could understand that," Kluivert said. "He wanted someone who knew by the club and he also told me: 'Patrick, it's time for you to stand on your own two feet'.
"That's why I did not go with him to Manchester United."
Kluivert, now coach of Curacao, continued: "So I decided to choose a different route to the top. I see this as the perfect way to end up with a good club as head coach."
