The kid brother of Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has turned pro.

John Rooney, the younger brother of England star Wayne, has signed a two-year professional contract with Macclesfield Town.

The midfielder, 17, was offered professional terms after impressing during the first 12 months of his two-year scholarship with the club.

Youth team manager John Askey told the club website: "John has come on leaps and bounds in the last year.

"He has got his head down and worked hard to get where he is today."

Askey added: "He is still by no means a finished product but if he continues to progress the way he has done then he will score a lot of goals for the club.

"For his age he is very strong and he's now got the chance to work and train with the first-team and hopefully show what he can do at the higher level."

Rooney joined the Silkmen's centre of excellence in March 2007 after being released by Everton.
