Liverpool have been assured they have first refusal on midfielder Javier Mascherano.

Kia Joorabchian, the head of the company that owns Mascherano's "economic rights", says Liverpool secured first refusal on the Argentina midfield player when they signed him on an 18-month loan.

"Liverpool do have first option," he said.
